ADVERTISING in a southwestern suit underwear Sydney shopfront has been branded “disgusting and offensive” by a local councillor.

Camden Labor councillor womens bikinis sale and former state election candidate Cindy Cagney said young children and teenagers did not need to be confronted by the lacy attire on show at the Bras N Things in Campbelltowns Macarthur Square shopping centre.

You worry for young children and teenagers, Ms Cagney told the local Macarthur Chronicle. Is it the image we really want to see of women? You are not going to see people parading around the shopping centre wearing lingerie.

You dont see that type of lingerie and poses on daytime TV.

Its an unrealistic view of women and to me it is sexually suggestive. I dont think it is necessary.

Bras N Things Macarthur Square is promoting the The All in the Lace campaign with large posters depicting six models dressed in lacy lingerie displayed on the shop windows.

With youth facing social issues of eating disorders, self esteem and body confidence, Cr Cagney said a conversation over the stores advertising was needed.

I am bringing it up as a conversation that needs to be had, she said.

They are very unrealistic images. I dont think it is suitable for a place with so many younger children and families. You dont have a choice if you want to see it or not.

If they want the posters inside the shop that is fine. People going inside the shop are going there to purchase lingerie and if the posters are in there I wouldnt mind. The fact is these posters are in everyones face.

At the end of the day, it is up to the individual what they want to wear.

A Macarthur Square spokeswoman said Bras N Things Macarthur Square promotional campaigns were governed by the Advertising Standards Bureau.

As part of their lease agreements with us, retailers can promote their products and brand in line with advertising standards, she said.

We value customer feedback and always pass on any comments to our retailers.

Bras N Things have been contacted for comment.
