El presidente del gobierno español, Mariano Rajoy, declaraba el miércoles como testigo en un importante juicio a unas 40 personas acusadas de participar en una trama de sobornos a cambio de contratos que habría ayudado a financiar su gobernante Partido Popular.

Rajoy no está acusado en el proceso, pero la Audiencia Nacional le citó a declarar porque ejerció de vicesecretario general del partido hasta 2003 y secretario general hasta 2004, cuando supuestamente seguía funcionando la trama ilegal.

Es la primera vez que un presidente del gobierno en el cargo comparece ante un tribunal desde la Transición española a la democracia hace cuatro décadas.

El caso se centra en los acuerdos a los que llegó Francisco Correa, un empresario detenido en 2009, a través de una red de colaboradores y empresas para organizar actos gratis para el Partido Popular a cambio de contratos públicos.

Con el fin de incentivar la investigación científica y médica, el Instituto Científico Pfizer (ICP) premió ayer tres proyectos que buscan mejorar las condiciones de los pacientes y ofrecer una mayor esperanza de vida.

Cada uno de los trabajos elegidos en las categorías de investigación básica, clínica y epidemiológica, podrán recibir hasta 500 mil pesos para su desarrollo.

En el evento, “Fondos de Investigación”, realizado en el Museo de Arte Conteporáneo (MUAC), Juan Carlos Molina, director del Instituto Científico Pfizer, se refirió a la importancia de reconocer a la comunidad científica y médica, pues son áreas propician el crecimiento de un país.

“El ICP, desde su origen ha financiado a más de 40 proyectos de investigación. En la convocatoria de este año llegamos a registrar hasta 80 proyectos, de los cuales 52 por ciento están dedicados a la investigación básica, 32 por ciento a la clínica y 26 por ciento a la epidemiológica”, precisó.

Este año participaron más de 100 colaboradores (investigadores independientes) en la evaluación de estos proyectos.

En el área básica, el proyecto ganador fue para la “Evaluación de la actividad antifungica de setralina en un modelo murino de aspergilosis pulmonar invasiva”, del doctor Rogelio de Jesús Treviño Rangel, de Nuevo León.

En el área clínica, se premió el proyecto de “Biomarcadores relacionados en la evolución de la enfermedad por VIH en pacientes tratados durante la infección aguda” del doctor Santiago Pérez.

Y en la rama de investigación epidemiológica, el acreedeor del fondo fue para la “Evaluación de la influencia de la obesidad sobre la resistencia a la insulina y su correlación con el estadio de la pubertad en población Zacatecana” de la doctora Edith Cárdenas Vargas.

Al evento asistió Rodrigo Puga, presidente y director general de Pfizer México, quien dijo que nuestro país tiene gran potencial en la investigación médica, la cual ha crecido cada año, y en donde el ICP ha jugado un papel fundamental desde hace 13 años.

“A través de este instituto hemos invertido más de 60 millones de pesos a favor del desarrollo de la ciencia en México. Sabemos que vamos por el camino correcto, ya que la participación cuantitativa y cualitativa ha sido cada vez mayor con el paso del tiempo”, destacó.

Unas 10.000 personas fueron evacuadas el miércoles en Francia ante el avance de un incendio forestal en la Riviera, que alcanzó la localidad de La Londe-les-Maures, según indicó el máximo responsable de la región mediterránea de Var.

El violento incendio comenzó poco antes de las 23:00 del martes y se enviaron 540 bomberos a la región, según un comunicado de la prefectura.

Unas 10.000 personas _unos 3.000 de ellos campistas_ fueron evacuados de La Londe y de las cercabas Bormes y La Lavandou, añadió el comunicado.

A la zona se enviaron cuatro aviones de rastreo y una aeronave para combatir las llamas. Por la mañana del miércoles ya habían ardido 800 hectáreas de bosque.

El lunes se declararon varios incendios en la costa de Francia, que forzaron varias evacuaciones más pequeñas cuando las llamas llegaron a una esquina de Saint-Tropez.

El opositor venezolano Leopoldo López llamó hoy al ejército a no reprimir al pueblo, a éste a afrontar los riesgos de lograr la libertad, y advirtió al presidente Nicolás Maduro que fracasará en aniquilar a la república.

López emitió a última hora de este martes vía Twitter un video, el primero desde que fue excarcelado el 8 de junio de la prisión de Ramo Verde tras casi tres años de reclusión.

Desde su domicilio, donde cumple el resto de la condena de 14 años por delitos de investigación pública, asociación para delinquir, daños a la propiedad e incendio, cometidos en una manifestación estudiantil el 12 de febrero de 2014.

Subrayó que Venezuela enfrenta la amenaza del aniquilamiento de la república y del Estado democrático, la cual encarna el presidente Maduro y quienes lo acompañan.

Indicó que en la consulta realizada el pasado domingo millones de venezolanos rechazaron la convocatoria a elegir a los miembros de una Asamblea Constituyente, presentada el 1 de mayo por Maduro.

En esa fecha 7.6 millones de venezolanos salieron a desconocer el proyecto de desmantelamiento de la república, insistió ante un cuadro de El Ávila, la principal montaña en las afueras de Caracas, y varias pilas de libros.

Con ese antecedente propuso la apertura de un canal humanitario para el ingreso de medicinas y alimentos de manera masiva. También la liberacion de todos los presos politicos.

Y por último, la concreción de un cronograma para la elección de alcaldes, gobernadores y Presidente de la Repúbllica para dar el paso hacia el cambio e ir a un gobierno de unidad nacional en Venezuela.

Luego llamó al ejército venezolano a que no sea cómplice del aniquilamiento de la república ni de la represión, que intenta llevar a cabo un grupo que solo quiere mantenerse en el poder.

"Desactiven el plan ya", reclamó a los militares.

Al presidente Maduro le advirtió que en la consulta del 16 de julio habló el pueblo y el mensaje tiene que ser acatado. Ese mandato lo haremos cumplir, subrayó.

El pueblo seguirá en las calles y no regresará a sus casas hasta lograr que no se aniquile la república.

Luego pidió al puelbo venezolano a que mantenga la lucha hasta conquistar la libertad, pues es la única manera de conseguir un país lleno de oportunidades.

También los llamó a participar en el paro cívico de dos días que inicia este miércoles y luego en la toma de Caracas del viernes siguiente, dos días antes de la elección de los miembros de la Asamblea Constituyente.

Tenemos que estar dispuestos a arriesgar, dijo López a sus conciudadanos, y les aseguró que "estamos del lado correcto de la historia".

El cardenal George Pell hizo el miércoles su primera comparecencia en Australia en un juicio por abusos sexuales y prometió a través de su abogado combatir unas acusaciones que han amenazado la imagen del papa como un cruzado contra los abusos en la Iglesia.

Pell es el funcionario del Vaticano de mayor jerarquía acusado en la crisis de abusos sexuales en la Iglesia católica.

El cardenal no se pronunció culpable o inocente de las acusaciones de que abusó sexualmente de varias personas en su estado natal, Victoria.

Sin embargo, su abogado dijo el miércoles al tribunal que Pell tiene previsto declararse oficialmente como no culpable en una vista judicial futura.

Una docena de policías formó un círculo en torno a Pell a su salida del tribunal, empujando para abrirle paso en medio de una masa de medios y entre gritos de manifestantes y partidarios.

El realizador exploró esta temática con "The Crazies" (1973), "Dawn of the Dead" (1978), "Day of the Dead" (1985), "Land of the Dead "(2005) y" Diario de los Muertos" (2008).

Estas películas nunca lograron llegar a ser sonoros hits, pero sí tuvieron permanentes taquillas, aún y cuando su más reciente "Survival of the Dead", fue relegado a una oferta de VOD (video bajo demanda) en 2009.

“La noche de los muertos vivientes” fue filmada con un pobre presupuesto de 114 mil dólares cerca de Pittsburgh (donde se filmaron la mayoría de las películas de Romero), con actores desconocidos y una crudeza técnica que le dan la sensación de una pesadilla.

Romero consolidó su reputación como maestro del género con la secuela "Dawn of the Dead", que se estrenó en Estados Unidos en 1979 y se convirtió en una de las producciones independientes más rentables de la historia del cine.

La franquicia eventualmente abarcaría varias películas:"La noche de los muertos vivientes", luego "Dawn of the Dead", "Día de los muertos" y "Tierra de los muertos", dijo Romero.

"Zombieland" de Sony se estrenó en octubre pasado y recaudó 76 millones de dólares en Estados Unidos, luego que su presupuesto fue menos de un tercio de ese monto, convirtiéndose en la película de mayor éxito de zombies y ya se prepara la secuela.

Por otro lado las películas de la serie "Resident Evil", de mayor presupuesto, basadas en un videojuego sobre un virus que convierte a las personas en zombies, han tenido éxito desde que se lanzó la franquicia en 2002.

Las tres películas de "Resident Evil" han recaudado 378 millones de dólares en todo el mundo.

El otro gran desarrollo reciente fue el éxito de Alex Garland en 2003 en el género, "28 Days Later". La película recaudó 83 millones de dólares en todo el mundo con un presupuesto de unos 10 millones de dólares, y su secuela de 2007, "28 Weeks Later", recaudó alrededor de tres cuartas partes de ese total.

Alrededor del mismo tiempo, Zack Snyder rehizo el "Dawn of the Dead" de Romero en 2004, y obtuvo más de 100 millones de dólares en recaudaciones en el mundo.

En los años 80 comenzó la proliferación de películas de zombies, y franquicias de cine zombie.

"El retorno de los muertos vivientes", de 1985, fue una comedia/horror, en la que un hombre y un grupo de punks defienden una ciudad de una horda de zombies.

En los últimos 10 años las compuertas se han abierto. En especial con "Resident Evil" de 2002, "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" de 2004 y "Resident Evil Extinction" de 2007.

"Los zombies han caído en un subgénero muy estrecho, el género de zombies post-apocalíptico, y limita el tipo de historias que puedes contar", dijo Chris Robertson, autor del cómic DC/Vertigo "I, Zombie".

"No querrías ser un zombie, no querrías enamorarte de un zombie, solo quieres matar a un zombie. Los zombies están a favor de todos los miedos que enfrentamos en nuestra vida cotidiana", resumió.

La figura del zombie no era originalmente estadunidense. Era una figura de miedo y terror mortal desarrollada en el vudú haitiano, explicó el crítico Stephen Marche.

Antes de la revolución, los esclavos haitianos creían que la muerte los devolvería a Guinea en África. Pero el zombie no podía ir a casa. Era esclavo incluso en la muerte, añadió Marche.

La noción del zombie puede haber comenzado como el rechazo de los colonos estadunidenses al suicidio; Incluso en ciertos tipos de muerte no habría liberación. La última agonía era ser un esclavo eternamente.

Dada esta historia, el zombie es quizá el tipo más grotesco dentro de la cultura pop. Un camión que transportaba a docenas de inmigrantes a Estados Unidos pasó por un puesto de control de la patrulla fronteriza dos horas antes de ser descubierto en el estacionamiento de una tienda de Walmart en San Antonio, dijo un congresista de Texas el martes. Diez de los pasajeros fueron hallados muertos.

Henry Cuellar dijo a The Associated Press que las autoridades lo informaron de que el conductor del camión, James Matthew Bradley Jr., que está acusado, pasó por el control próximo a Laredo alrededor de las 22:00 horas del sábado. La policía llegó al estacionamiento del Walmart a las 00:23 horas del domingo.

El congresista desconoce si los inmigrantes que cruzaron la frontera de Estados Unidos ilegalmente subieron al camión antes o después de pasar por el control.

Una diplomática guatemalteca identificó el martes a uno de los fallecidos como Frank Guisseppe Fuentes, de 19 años. Según Cristy Andrino, Fuentes iba a reunirse con su familia en Maryland.

Dos huracanes y una tormenta tropical avanzaban a última hora del martes ante la costa mexicana del Pacífico, pero según meteorólogos no suponen una amenaza inminente para la costa.

Hilary es un huracán de categoría 2 con vientos máximos sostenidos de 165 kilómetros por hora (105 millas por hora), explicó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes de Estados Unidos. Su centro está a unos 765 kilómetros (475 millas) al sur del extremo meridional de Baja California y avanza en dirección oeste-noroeste a unos 19 km por hora (12 millas).

Se prevé que mantenga la categoría de huracán los dos próximos días.

La tormenta tropical Irwin se convirtió en un huracán de categoría 1 con vientos de 150 km por hora (90 millas) pero también se aleja de la costa.

No se activaron alertas ni avisos costeros durante el martes.
